Article analysis task


An analysis of an article written by Naomi May published in ELLE, January 2024.

In this article, May discusses how “The government is banning disposable vapes” in the UK. This piece gets straight to the point in the headline by stating what the article entails following it. However, one could say that this takes away from being interested in what must be said because the audience will read the headline and not bother reading the rest of what it includes. May incorporates newsworthiness factors such as including the most crucial information that the people need to know as it is a topic which impacts many individuals in today’s society’s, especially the youngsters. It successfully educated us as readers by stating many facts and statistics on the matter. They are all accurate in the way that the contemporary world is being affected by (disposable) vapes, however it is describing the way our Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, is going against some of the population who knows how to limit their puffs a day to a certain number. The article is informative on what Sunak has been arguing in his plan to ban disposable vapes as it incorporates quotes straight from his move. As this report discusses our Prime Minister who is a politician and is a high-ranking individual in the UK who is considered prominent and therefore worthy of news coverage. This is important in an article as newsworthiness is determined by prominence. The author wrote this piece in a structured way (inverted pyramid) by summarising the most important points and information in a couple of paragraphs.
